The project is structured around 8 areas of activity (Work Packages), designed and developed collaboratively by the four institutions:

Work Package #1

Sounding images: Reshaping the heritage of Italian cinema classics

New sounds for Italian cinema masterpieces

A project dedicated to the rediscovery and enhancement of the Italian audiovisual heritage through live music.

Major Italian composers —from Giacomo Puccini and Riccardo Zandonai to Angelo Francesco Lavagnino and Egisto Macchi — are reinterpreted by orchestras and ensembles in innovative film-concerts.

The project involves AFAM students and prominent cultural institutions to create new ways of experiencing classic Italian films.

Work Package #2

Sounding images: Emerging young artists commission project

A platform for new audiovisual creativity

Through an international open call, young artists under 35 are invited to propose original works combining sound and image.

The winners, selected by an international jury, will receive support to produce their creations.

The project aims to foster innovation in digital arts and audiovisual languages, encouraging experimentation across electronic music, acoustic instruments, and contemporary media.

Work Package #3

Screening sounds:
Re-imaging speech

The human voice as an orchestral instrument

This WP explores new expressive forms based on the human voice and its prosodic flow.

Innovative orchestral and ensemble compositions integrate vocal recordings and historical footage to represent speech through acoustic instruments.

Work Package #4

Screening sounds: Imaginary landscapes

Italian landscapes between art, technology, and sustainability

Cutting-edge technologies such as LiDAR and drones are used to capture and reinterpret Italian landscapes in immersive audiovisual works. Guided by internationally renowned artists, students and professionals create new content that reflects on environmental and cultural transformations. The project seeks to spark a global dialogue on the balance between digital innovation and ecological awareness.

Work Package #5

Sounding images: Italian Arts between past and future

Interactive installations narrating Italian art

WP5 aims to renew the storytelling of Italy’s artistic heritage — both historical and contemporary — through interactive and immersive audiovisual installations. Starting from archival materials, a multidisciplinary team will create flexible and modular experiences suitable for a variety of exhibition spaces. The goal is to engage audiences with new ways of interacting with Italy’s cultural memory.

Work Package #6

Screening sounds: Expanded Audiovisual Storytelling Commission and Production

Innovative narratives through intermedia art

This work package fosters the creation of large-scale and modular audiovisual works, new media art, and live performances. Two advanced production centers — the IRIS studio (Conservatory of Lecce) and IED Milan — collaborate to merge traditional artistry with cutting-edge technologies. Through workshops, lectures, and mentorships with renowned artists, the project generates new multimedia content that reinterprets historical materials and showcases Italy’s cultural heritage in contemporary forms.

Work Package #7

The intermedia HUB: IRIS Intermedia Research and Innovation in Sound

A cutting-edge hub for immersive sound and intermedia art

The IRIS Hub, coordinated by the Conservatorio of Lecce, serves as a state-of-the-art center for research and production in acoustics and intermedia art. Connected virtually with partner facilities in Trento and Milan, IRIS focuses on immersive sound technologies, electroacoustic research, and AI-driven creative processes. The hub supports all related project productions, fosters collaboration between artists and technologists, and contributes to advancing innovative practices in sound and multimedia art.

Work Package #8

Sounding images / Screening sounds: Music, sound, voices and technologies in Italian audiovisuals

Scientific research and cultural dissemination

Led by IULM University, this work package provides scientific support across the project’s activities. It coordinates research on music and sound in audiovisual formats and the role of voice and technology. The WP includes international conferences, publications, and collaborations with doctoral programs, as well as outreach initiatives in high schools and public events. Through these activities, the project promotes a deeper understanding of Italy’s audiovisual culture and fosters knowledge exchange at both academic and public levels.
