In this session, an introduction will be provided the book Sonic Warfare, recently translated into Italian as Guerra Sonora on Nero Press (2024). The lecture will involve a discussion of contemporary examples of the utilisation of sound as a weapon, as a tool to change the way people feel and behave, in particular its deployment to produce an atmosphere of fear. Examples will include the sound of drone warfare, the LRAD (long range acoustic device) and the application of digital technology used to map cities for the sound of gunshots.

A conversation will follow which will engage with examples of how sound artists have responded to this contemporary reality.”
