Film Concert titled Italy in Film: The Song, Opera, and Novel in 20th-Century Movies

A film concert conceived in collaboration with Francesco Finocchiaro from the “Rossini” Conservatory of Pesaro, based on the screening of excerpts from five films and the live performance of symphonic adaptations of their soundtracks.
The music to be performed — created for video, orchestra, and recorded voices — is the result of work by current and former students from several Italian music academies, as well as a commissioned composition by Cosimo Colazzo, professor at the “Bonporti” Conservatory.
This project was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Cineteca di Bologna Foundation.

This concert opens a multi-day event showcasing the activities of SISS, through lectures, interviews, installations, and performances. In Trento, we will meet all the SISS partners — namely the “Tito Schipa” Conservatory of Lecce, IULM University of Milan, and the European Institute of Design (IED) in Milan, along with several Italian and international institutions collaborating in its realization.

Here is the concert program, featuring the Bonporti Orchestra conducted by Prof. Andrea Raffanini:

• Francesco Angelo Lavagnino, “Chanson de Lima” from the film entitled L’impero del sole (Mario Craveri and Enrico Gras, 1956). Adaptation and orchestration by the students of the Saint Louis College of Music (Rome). Coordination by Prof. Ludovico Fulci.
• Music by Ernesto De Curtis and Francesco Buongiovanni from the film ’A Santanotte by Elvira Notari (1921–22).
  Adaptation and orchestration  by Angela Feo, Cristian Lombardi and Vincenzo Russo, students of the “San Pietro a Majella” Conservatory (Naples). Coordination by Prof. Paolo Tortiglione.
• Original soundtrack from the film Napoli che canta (Roberto Leone Roberti,1926, digitalisation by George Eastman Museum Rochester NY). Adaptation and orchestrati.n by Andrea Siano.
• Giuseppe Verdi and Riccardo Zandonai, excerpts from the film Amami Alfredo (Carmine Gallone, 1942). Adaptation and  orchestration by Cosimo Colazzo. Based on the transcription of the manuscript curated by “Riccardo Zandonai” International Study Center of Rovereto (Trento).
• Giacomo Puccini, excerpts from the film Avanti a lui tremava tutta Roma (Carmine Gallone, 1940). Adaptation and  orchestration by Michele Callà, Sebastiano de Salvo, Paolo Orlandi, students of the “Bonporti” Conservatory (Trento and Riva del Garda). Coordination by  Nicola Straffelini.
