Sounding images / Screening sounds: music, sound, voices and technologies in Italian audiovisuals

Topic

The lecture addresses singing and the voice within a unified field, considered transversally across artistic and extra-artistic practices. The voice is a form of sound and, as such, is defined by five material dimensions: pitch, duration, intensity, spatiality, and timbre. Yet the voice is also inevitably charged with human meaning.

Drawing on examples from contemporary musical and artistic practices, the talk reflects on how the physical dimensions of vocal sound invariably entail aspects of human existence and experience-breath, age, gender, emotion, intimacy and distance, among others.
