The author explores a central tension in contemporary multimedia music: the interplay between dematerialization and rematerialization in the musical spectacle. The presentation begins with examples drawn from contemporary classical music. It first considers how digital technologies encourage convergence between music and abstract video, leading to forms of increasing disembodiment. It then examines a countertendency in which matter and the body regain centrality within digitally mediated environments, often in entirely new and unprecedented ways.
